DIY engine rebuild documentation, repair tips, and lessons from rebuilding a Hyundai Veloster Turbo G4FJ engine.

DIY ENGINE REPAIR STARTS HERE
FROM SPUN BEARING TO FULL ENGINE REBUILD…
This DIY engine rebuild started when the 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo I bought from an auction developed a spun bearing. I wanted to take on something new and learn more about cars, so I decided to tear into the G4FJ and rebuild it myself.
Follow the real build, problems, tools, torque specs, mistakes and lessons learned along the way.
The Real G4FJ Motor Rebuild
From pulling the engine to finding the spun bearing and rebuilding the G4FJ, here’s a quick look at how the project unfolded.

A DIY Engine Rebuild From Start to Finish
This DIY engine rebuild began when my 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo developed a spun bearing. DIY Engine Build Lab documents a real DIY engine rebuild from diagnosis through final assembly. This project began when my recently purchased 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo was found to have developed a spun rod bearing in its G4FJ engine. Rather than installing another used engine or buying one of those cheap online engines, I decided to tear the OEM engine down, identify the failure, and rebuild it myself.
Along the way, I documented the problems I encountered, the parts I replaced, the tools I used, and the lessons I learned. The rebuild included removing the engine, inspecting the cylinders and pistons, replacing the damaged crankshaft and connecting rods, machining the cylinder head, lapping the valves, installing new racing components, and carefully reassembling the engine.
DIY Engine Build Lab is designed to share that experience with other people interested in repairing and understanding their own engines. You’ll find real photographs from the project, practical how-to information, torque specifications, diagnostic tips, and examples of what engine failure can look like when you get inside the motor.
This isn’t a perfect shop build performed with unlimited equipment. It’s a real DIY engine rebuild, including the challenges, mistakes, problem-solving, and successes that came with doing the work myself.
